A unique code identifying a specific product or item for inventory tracking and reordering.
A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a unique internal code an organisation assigns to each distinct, stockable item so it can be identified, counted, and reordered. A SKU usually encodes attributes that make a variant unique, such as model, size, or colour, so two similar items never get confused in inventory.
Why it matters: clean SKUs are the backbone of accurate stock counts, fast reordering, and meaningful consumption reports. A SKU is internal to your business, unlike a barcode or EAN, which is a universal manufacturer code, and unlike an HSN code, which classifies goods for GST in India.
