Why Control Software Installation?

Uncontrolled software installation creates three problems: security vulnerabilities (unpatched or malicious software), licence non-compliance (unlicensed software triggering audit penalties), and system instability (incompatible software causing crashes). A software installation policy prevents all three.

Policy Requirements

• Admin rights: Remove local admin rights from standard users. Software installation requires IT approval.
• Approved software list: Maintain a list of pre-approved software that can be installed without additional review.
• Request process: Submit a helpdesk ticket for software not on the approved list. IT reviews for security, licence, and compatibility.
• Prohibited software: Define categories that are never approved (torrent clients, hacking tools, gambling apps).
