Why You Need an Internet Usage Policy

Unrestricted internet usage wastes bandwidth, introduces security risks, and can create legal liability. A clear policy sets expectations for what is acceptable and what is not, while protecting the company from misuse and abuse.

What to Include

  • Permitted Use: Internet access is provided for work purposes. Limited personal use is permitted during breaks provided it does not affect productivity or bandwidth.
  • Prohibited Activities: Downloading illegal content, streaming services during work hours, torrenting, accessing gambling or adult content, using personal cloud storage for company data.
  • Email Guidelines: Company email is for business use. Professional tone expected. No forwarding chain emails. Confidentiality notice in signatures.
  • Monitoring Notice: The company reserves the right to monitor internet and email usage for security and compliance purposes.
  • Security Requirements: Do not open suspicious attachments. Report phishing attempts. Do not share company credentials via email.

FAQ

Can my employer read my personal email?

If you use the company email address, yes — company email belongs to the company. If you use your personal email on your personal device, no — but using company resources (WiFi, devices) for personal activities may still be monitored.
