Why an Exit IT Checklist?

When an employee leaves, every day of delayed access revocation is a security risk. Every unreturned laptop is a financial loss. A structured exit checklist ensures clean, secure departures.

Last Working Day

  • Disable directory account (Google/Azure AD)
  • Revoke access to all third-party tools
  • Remove from distribution lists and Slack channels
  • Reset API keys and service account passwords
  • Remove VPN and Wi-Fi access
  • Collect all IT assets (laptop, charger, monitor, phone)
  • Inspect returned hardware and document condition
  • Perform data sanitisation on collected devices
  • Update asset registry: status to "Returned"

Data Transfer

  • Forward emails to manager or successor
  • Transfer file ownership
  • Transfer project ownership
  • Document all transfer actions

Post-Exit (30 Days)

  • Confirm all access revoked
  • Archive email mailbox (do not delete for 90 days)
  • Run security scan for lingering access
  • Close offboarding ticket
