What Is a Disaster Recovery Plan?

A disaster recovery (DR) plan defines how your business recovers IT systems after a major incident — server room flood, ransomware attack, extended power outage, or pandemic. Without a DR plan, recovery is ad-hoc, slow, and expensive. With a plan, you know exactly what to do, who does it, and how long it takes.

DR Plan Structure

  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO): Maximum acceptable downtime per system.
  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO): Maximum acceptable data loss (measured in time).
  • Critical systems list: Ranked by business impact.
  • Recovery procedures: Step-by-step for each critical system.
  • Communication plan: Who to notify, how, and when.
