Why Change Management Prevents Disasters

The majority of IT outages are caused by changes — software updates, configuration changes, hardware replacements — that were not properly planned or tested. A change management policy ensures every change is documented, approved, tested, and reversible.

Change Categories

  • Standard change: Pre-approved, low-risk, follows a documented procedure (e.g., monthly patch deployment).
  • Normal change: Requires approval from the Change Advisory Board (CAB) or designated approver.
  • Emergency change: Required to fix a critical issue. Fast-tracked with post-implementation review.
